Fingerprintz was a Scottish new wave band active from 1978 to 1981. The group was formed by singer-songwriter and guitarist Jimme O'Neill, guitarist Cha Burns, drummer Bob Schilling (also known as Bogdan Wiczling), bassist Kenny Alton, and vocalist Step Lang. They released three albums during their tenure:
The Very Dab (1979)
Distinguishing Marks (1980)
Beat Noir (1981)
Their debut album, The Very Dab, featured a dark, throbbing sound with wry and bizarre lyrics, exemplified by tracks like "Punchy Judy" and "Beam Me Up Scotty." The follow-up, Distinguishing Marks, showcased a shift towards a slicker, pop-oriented sound, with catchy melodies and polished production by Nick Garvey of The Motors. Notable songs from this album include "Bulletproof Heart" and "Amnesia." Their final album, Beat Noir, ventured into a rock/funk fusion, combining heavy bass lines with themes of paranoia and frustration. Despite critical acclaim, the band didn't achieve significant commercial success. After disbanding, O'Neill and Burns went on to form The Silencers, achieving more commercial recognition in the late 1980s.
Why Tizre Wanted to Re-Record Distinguishing Marks
Some albums don’t just live on your turntable—they live in your bones. Distinguishing Marks by Fingerprintz is one of those records. From the moment I first dropped the needle on it, I knew I was listening to something special. Quirky, clever, and criminally underrated, this album captured a sound that was sharp-edged yet melodic, full of new wave swagger and pop craftsmanship.
During that golden era of post-punk and new wave, Fingerprintz became part of the personal soundtrack to my life. I saw them live, bought the album and wore out my copy with repeated listens. Distinguishing Marks wasn’t just music—it was a statement. Bold, witty, rhythmically inventive. It was a band at the height of its creative power, somehow flying just under the radar while delivering absolute gems.
Fast-forward to now, decades later—and that energy, that spirit, still holds up. But here's the thing: many people have never heard of this record. It deserves more than to be a footnote in new wave history. It deserves to be rediscovered, reinterpreted, and reintroduced to a new generation of listeners. That’s why I decided to re-record the entire album. Not to replace the original—but to celebrate it, honor it, and give it a fresh sonic life with deep respect for the songwriting, the performances, and the era.
This isn’t about nostalgia—it’s about legacy. It’s about giving this music the platform it always deserved. And for those of us who remember, it's a love letter. For those discovering it for the first time, it’s a revelation.
With every chord, every hook, every nuance—we're aiming to keep the spirit of Distinguishing Marks alive and shining. Because some records aren’t meant to fade. They’re meant to echo.
